Green Power is a type of sustainable and renewable energy which uses non-polluting and environment-friendly sources of energy to provide the energy needs of today’s generation without risking the resources needed by future generations. Wind, solar, hydro and geothermal energy are considered as Green Power, because they are able to supply energy without any detrimental effects to the environment. These sources are termed as “Green” because it is highly believed they produce less pollution and decrease carbon emissions.

Green Power is a term exclusive to the subject of electricity production. A viable source of green power would be one which efficiently generates electricity with a relatively low cost and a lower negative impact on the environment. It relies mostly on natural and environmental effects, such as the movement of the wind, the heat of the sun, tidal waves and geothermal heat in order to produce energy. With today’s growing awareness on climate change, green power is being marketed as a solution for the lowering of greenhouse gas emission and the slowly depleting conventional energy sources like fossil fuels, coal, nuclear energy, etc. Since materials needed for the creation of green power is not depleted, it can ensure that future generations will have all the energy they need.

By switching over to Green power, consumers may still maximize their electricity use. Most often, people will see little difference between green power and conventional power sources. Also, by advocating green power, one may increase the awareness and need for “greener” energy sources. Though subscribing to green power will cost consumers an additional fee, this small amount is beneficial as it used to further develop the renewable energy industry.

Old, conventional energy sources are responsible for most of the carbon emissions and environmental ills present today. If more and more people use green power, the renewable energy sector can grow and even compete with coal, fossil fuel and nuclear energy sources which is not renewable and definitely not environment friendly. Today, green power is only considered as a small, minor energy alternative and due to its small size, it cannot sustain whole cities with energy for a long period of time. However, if more consumers request green power from their respective utility providers, companies will begin stocking and storing green energy sources regularly, raising the demand, and increasing the need for more establishments dedicated to producing green power.

Most consumers can get green power through their local utility provider via the electricity grid. However, some consumers may contact power providers to set up your own green power source at home. Most companies provide green power to residential areas through wind turbines and solar panels, because these are the most convenient. Having your own green power system can make you independent energy-wise as you don’t have to rely much on the conventional electricity grid. Second, renewable energy sources can be stored, so you don’t have to worry about running out of energy, for example, when there is no wind, or if it is night time or cloudy, you can still get ample source of energy.
